Hūlili Journal

Publication design and typesetting for Hūlili: Multidisciplinary Research on Hawaiian Well-Being, produced at Stacey Leong Design.

Hours of reading. Years of typesetting. Worth every minute.
Hūlili was one of those projects that quietly became one of the most complex of my career. I typeset three volumes of this academic journal on Hawaiian well-being for Kamehameha Schools — and every single issue was a masterclass in attention to detail.

Each essay arrived formatted differently, which meant careful review before anything went into InDesign. I'd spend hours reading through the full manuscript — flagging Hawaiian words that required special typesetting treatment, identifying songs (mele) that needed specific indentation, and noting charts and graphs that had to be recreated from scratch to match the existing layout.

It was slow, meticulous, deeply satisfying work. And an unexpected education in Hawaiian culture along the way.
